Yuck Bugs!

So Phil is off enjoying his Tour de France holiday and Im missing him!! Its so quiet in the apartment. It does mean I can do things I wouldn't do when he is here.. leave clothes everywhere, eat standing up over the bench, eat icecreams before dinner.. It also means that I have to do stuff that I would get him to do ie. fixing my flat tyre (took me over an hour, got grease everywhere and not even sure if I fixed it propery) and killing bugs.. This morning, there was a big spider on my bathroom mat. Im too scared to kill it so I've just put a cup over it. Move to the other side of the world on my own? Sure no problem. Spider? OMFG get it away from me!! The irony.

Meanwhile I was thinking about a trip down the South of England or Wales.. somewhere I can go by train within a day. Any suggestions??

Back to Normal

After enduring a very quiet Friday by normal standards, yesterday I got back on the tube. I thought the sooner I got it over with the better. Phil had to go to Waterloo to catch the Eurostar and I wanted to see him off. We caught the District line to Embankment and then the Northern line down to Waterloo. I must admit, I was a bit nervy and did notice a lot of people looking around, looking at peoples bags. I feel sorry for the decent, law abiding Muslim people of London who are going to cop flack and have people eye them suspiciously because of the link with Al Queda.

After that, I got back on the Jubilee line eastbound and caught it all the way to Stratford. All the Olympic bid stuff is everywhere but it seems tarnished now because of what happened on the 7th July. I caught the Central line up to Leytonstone and went (finally) to Primark... so excellent. Spent about £70 and came back with a pair of pants, long skirt, jacket, hoodie, 2 tops, a shirt, 3 belts, some earrings and a bag. It was excellent. I also bought 3 pairs of shoes from a place just up the road.
After that I headed home on the Central line and then caught the Docklands Light Railway that goes past our apartment to Bow Church. 5 different lines in one day. I used to enjoy the Underground, as long as I had a seat. No one can phone you and you can just sit and read or think about things. When I was freelancing a lot, the Underground was the only time I had to myself but for now, Im going to be a bit anxious about being down there.

Well, Im off to the Tate Sedate with a friend of mine from work. Should be a lovely day as the weather is beautiful!

Calm

There are only a few people left in the office. My Mum called a lot of people back home to let them know that I was safe. To all the others that have rang or emailed, thanks for the sweet messages. Phil & I are both fine and everyone in my office was accounted for. The bus services are resuming but not sure about here as we normally take buses from Aldgate, just outside the station there. I don't know how I feel about getting back on a bus today. I cant explain just how surreal the feeling is, knowing that this is all going on metres from where I am sitting yet feeling so far removed from it.

I have quite a long walk home today if I dont get back on a bus and I still need to finish some work. Will update more on the situation later. I heard rumours that they have more attacks for this afternoon but I think everyone is just a little hysteric from this morning.

My sympathies to all those who have lost loved ones.

Scared in London

Well, today was supposed to be a happy day for me. Phil and I have our one year anniversary. This morning we were late going to work, which isn't unusual. We got to the tube to find people streaming out and it not running. Also not unusual. We hopped on a bus and got to work but we started hearing talk about bombs and power surges and explosions. There were a lot of emergency services going around and helicopters flying overhead. I thought something has gone wrong here. I checked in with my old housemate Dave to see he was ok, thankfully he was in early and missed the explosion near Liverpool Street. Aldgate and Aldgate East (where I normally catch the tube) had also suffered explosions. Talk of tubes with holes in them and bodies lying on the ground. Slowly more news came in, buses being blown up, friends hearing the noise from their offices, more tube stations being hit. The whole transport network is shut down here, the roads are closed in a lot of places. Emergency services are everywhere, along with the army. Supposedly its suicide bombers. I heard one was shot in Canary Wharf whilst all the people were stuck in the offices. Other friends told to shut their windows and close blinds in case more bombs go off in the street. People are dead and its hard to concentrate on work. It doesnt seem so important.

Coming from a small town, I have always been scared that I might be caught up in something like this. You think about it on the tube sometimes but put it out of your mind just as quickly because it seems ridiculous. But now it happens. I dont know what else to say. Its a surreal feeling to have it happening in the place I call home. I just hope that there aren't too many people killed or injured.

Lazy Sunday afternoon.

Its been a pretty lazy weekend actually. Im still busy sorting out and renaming photos in my Flickr account but that's about the most productive thing I have done.

After we took Mum to the airport on Friday night and said a slightly emotionally goodbye, Phil and I came home to a quiet (and not so cramped) apartment. I spent a good part of Saturday in bed, reading my new book, Underground London: Travels Between City Streets and watching Series 5 of Sex & The City. Phil was busy playing GTA San Andreas. We did manage to catch bits of Live 8 & Wimbledon.

When it comes to Live 8, why do I feel so cynical about the whole thing? I for one support writing off the debt but do I need to be subjected to famous people posturing about it? I think there would of been a lot of people in that audience who were there for the free concert and not because they wanted justice for Africa. The problem in Africa and a lot of so called third world countries isn't just the fault of G8. They could write off the debt and that would be a fantastic start but the multinationals who exploit these countries for their profits need to make changes, the warlords and tribes need to stop worrying about their disputes and start helping their people instead of spending money on conflict and weapons. The drug companies need to help out by offering their products to these country to stop the spread of disease and help manage the aids crisis.

Rant over, my dinner is going to be ready soon and today I feel just that little bit more thankful that I have dinner to eat.
