Columbia Rd Market in London

English Cottage Flowers
Originally uploaded by yahnyinlondon.

I went to the Columbia Rd Market yesterday, although unfortunately my camera died as soon as I got in there. Managed to get some bargains - 3 ivy for a fiver and 4 bunchs of roses for a fiver. Will go a little later next time and hopefully have my camera fully operational.

On the way home I ran into a friend of my old housemate. He was buying plants for his new apartment just off Roman Rd. So I went over there in the arvo for a nice glass of white wine (or 4). I had to ride my bike home around 9pm, pissed as a mute. Suprised I made it back alive actually.

Today, after I get some work done, Im going to ride down Regents Canal and take some more pics.

And one more thing. Lets not talk about the cricket.

I cant believe it

Bill Lawry cant believe it. Again, we are getting flogged in the cricket. The only hope we have is if it pisses down for the next 3 days and they declare it a draw. Australia better pull their finger out and start playing.

We went to the memorial on Wednesday, which was hard. Hard to see his girlfriend so devestated. Hard to believe it was all actually real and he is gone. Such a bloody waste. The wake after was messy. Far too much booze, far too much emotion. I think everyone there had their moments. Thursday was a bit of a right off.

On a happier note, tonight we are going to Agnes birthday/moving house party. Should be fun but I dont feel much like drinking. Its a bank holiday this weekend too! w00t!

Oh and one more thing - Network Rail - you're maintenance workers, who work outside our apartment window are the most inconsiderate bunch of ******** ever. I was woken up three times by their slamming, banging and conversations. One of which included an argument between two workers swearing their heads off. If you had a contact number that worked I would actually ring it and complain. This happens at least once a week and Im sick of it. Network Rail - you win the sucky award for this week.

Still so busy.

I started to get into the routine of posting at lunch only to fall out of it again. Work is still so busy. I was sick (still am) all last week. I worked from home on Wednesday because I had too much work that I couldn't even take a day off. Wednesday, it was a really shit awful day. I was sick, stressed and busting my gut to get a pitch done. Then about 1:30pm in the afternoon I get a phone call telling me a workmate, who is a good friend to both Phil & I, had commit suicide. I had spoken to him the evening before. In fact, I had spoken to him & his girlf (an ex-workmate) last before they left that night. I had thought they had been having a tiff, so tried to cheer them up with crappy jokes. I thought I was intruding so I let them be. I was worried they had broken up but I never imagined that he would do something like that. Generally, he seemed to be a happy cheery guy who had his moments like the rest of us. I still expect to hear his voice downstairs and that it was all some big mistake. His Mum flew into London and I met her on Friday. Such a lovely lady. In a situation like that you just wish you could say something magical that would ease the pain. All I could say that he was a good mate, a good laugh and how gutted I am about it. I guess no matter how many times you ask why or how you wish things could of been different the ending is still the same. I just hope he is at peace, wherever he is.

Proper Fruit & Vegies

I mentioned in my last post that I ordered a whole pile of organic vegies from a place called Farmaround. Well yesterday they arrived! I had ordered a luxury vegie box, a standard fruit box and standard module - there was a loads of vegies (and for £28 you would expect there to be) I had loads of fun cleaning and putting them all away. I chopped up a few and put in the freezer for later in the week and then left the other stuff for our lunchs/dinners. We actually did a taste test between the organic galia melon and a tesco's galia melon - the tesco melon, frankly, tasted like crap! Im totally sold on this whole weekly surprise delivery. There was chick pea sprouts, cos lettuce (big ceasar salad tonight) fresh beetroot, leeks, roma tomatoes, runner beans, plums. Things I wouldn't go out of my way to buy normally. I just wanted to make a big salad and eat it!

Tonight, Im heading to the Genesis Cinema to watch Charlie & The Chocolate Factory for the bargain basement price of £3.80. Gotta love tight arse ticket prices. If you live near East London, all prices there are £3.80 on a Wednesday, other days its around £6 so not too bad.

no! monday.

Meanwhile its suddenly Monday. Those cheeky little buggars seem to sneak up on you. One moment its Friday and the next moment you're waking up going "Do I really have to get out of bed for work?".

On Saturday night, Phil & I rode our bikes over to The Dove in Hackney for a nice Belgian meal. I choose the Wild Boar burger and he had the mussels. Obviously it came with frites (you may recognise me from such English names as chips!). Well personally, I wouldn't really rave about it. The portion size of the mussels wasn't too bad but the side order of chips was tiny. I had a wild boar burger and being an Australian, I find pepper just a little bit too spicy and that was all I could taste. The mayo wasn't even proper Belgian mayo. This was stodgy salad cream type stuff - ick. Ive officially become a mayo snob. It came to just over £20 so price-wise it was ok. I think Belgo's was a lot nicer if you are looking for Belgian food in England. Although with Eurostar trips being pretty cheap I would just head for the real thing!

I finally decided to buy another display to connect to my laptop Acer 19" Display. It was pretty cheap so Im a bit concerned on the quality but it will be nice to have a proper sized display to look at. It should be arriving next week.

Arriving tomorrow is my order of Organic Vegetables from Farmaround. Not sure how big their delivery net is (probably London only) but Im getting a luxury box of veggies, a standard fruit box and a salad module. Im actually really excited to see the quality and the taste of organic vegies vs. nasty stuff from Tescos.

Ive also booked my hotel for New York. We are staying somewhere called Hotel 17.. Woody Allen filmed there and Madonna has stayed there (although probably before she was famous and had loads of money!) If you regularly book hostels/budget hotels I seriously recommend buying a goldcard from Hostelworld. I book quite a few trips every year - it cost me $10 but having booked 8 different places, Ive saved myself $6 (not much but better than nothing hey?).

Anyways thats enough for now :)
