Stockholm, Sweden

So Im back from my trip to Stockholm, Sweden. What an absolute fantastic place that is. Its so beautiful and clean but bloody expensive. If you are flying Ryanair like I was, be warned that Skavsta Airport, is about 80 minutes drive to the city centre. I was nervous about flying on my own but I was reasonably calm. I was just counting to ten and breathing very deeply!

I was lucky enough to be staying on Gamla Stan island, which is just smack bang in the middle of the Old Town. If you are planning a trip to Stockholm, this is a great place to be based, although the hostel on the Af Chapman is perhaps even better.

Now - sightseeing! One of my best investments was a Stockholmkortet which you can purchase here. That gains you free entry just about everywhere, some boat rides around the harbour/canals and free transport on the buses, trams and metro. For 540 Swedish Kronor (around £40) for 3 days you cant really go wrong. Be warned, a lot of things close at 4pm, so you really need to be up and going by 10am to make the most of the day there.

Things to do in Stockholm
1. Vasamuseet
2. Skansen - I was told this was very touristy (and it is, steer clear of the overpriced gift shop) but the animals are great fun.
3. Royal Palace - there is a beautiful collection of the Queens gowns.
4. Archipelago - take a lunch or dinner cruise, they are longer. The 2 hour cruise barely covered anything.
5. Aquaria - the piranhas are cool.
6. Drottningholm is quite a way out of town, take the boat cruise (you get a discount with the card) and make a good day of it, if you have plenty of time.
7. Wander around the old town and have a bite to eat in Stortorget.
8. Climb to the top of Stadshuset for the view over the Old Town.

Food.
All the restaurants have great lunch specials. If you want to try Swedish meatballs, Salmon, Elk or Reindeer get a lunch special somewhere. Main meals at lunch are around 130 Swedish Kronor compared to about 200-300 at dinner. There are loads of great places around Gamla Stan, as well as lots of great cafes - Try the one at the end of Vasterlanggatan.
