Bistrotheque, Hackney

Brad and I went to Bistrotheque earlier this year for breakfast and I’d had it on my list of places I wanted to go for dinner for some time. As luck would have it, Brad’s Aunt Jan was visiting and offered to take us for dinner as a thank you for putting her up for the weekend. As it was a nice evening, we decided to walk down the road to take advantage of their Monday - Thursday offer (3 courses for £17.50).

Apple, Coolea & Fennel Salad

For starters, I plumped for the Apple, Fennel and Coolea Salad. Coolea is one of my favourite cheeses so I was interested to see it used in a salad. Unfortunately I don’t think the salad made the best use of the cheese, the juices from the apple made the thin slices quite soggy.

Steak Tartare

Brad went for double steak, starting his meal with Steak Tartare. The portion was a little small for an entree but well executed. The meat itself was of a high quality.

Fish & Chips

My main of Fish and Chips was a little mean in terms of portion size of the fish but the individual components of the dish were quite good — The fish had a crunchy exterior, the chips were fresh, the tartare sauce and mushy peas were both home-made — really, there wasn’t too much to complain about.

Steak with Bearnaise Sauce

Brad had opted for Steak and Chips with Bearnaise Sauce as the second part of his steak dinner. As per my main, the size of the steak was rather mean and it was a bit overdone. The bearnaise sauce was very good, although looking back at these photos, they both the bearnaise and tartare sauce had the appearance of not being very fresh. A quick stir before serving would have made all the difference.

Vanilla Pannacotta

Apologies for the quality of the above photo, once the sun went down, there wasn’t much light in the room and I only had my iPhone with me. The Pannacotta with Summer Fruits was lovely but very small. They could have been a bit more generous with the fruits on the side if not the pannacotta.

Overall, Bistrotheque felt like a little bit of a let-down after our experience with breakfast, which is a real shame. If we’d enjoyed our dinner more, I’d have been more inclined to go back. If I’m not sure how good a restaurant will be, I’m quite happy to try out some of these deals as a precursor to going back and spending more.
