Ed’s Easy Diner, Soho

Earlier this year, we were at a pub in Soho for a friend’s birthday and suddenly realised we should really get something for dinner. We scooted around to Byron but found it closing. We thought we’d settle for GBK but that too was closing their doors when we arrived. Desperate burger requirements call for desperate burger measures and we headed over to the ever reliable Ed’s Easy Diner. A Soho fixture for as long as I can remember, it’s a guilty pleasure at lunch and a staple choice later in the evening.

Chips

We were seated promptly by the energetic wait staff, keeping ourselves amused and our ears almost bleeding with the interesting choice of tunes on the jukebox. The Classic Fries (£2.80) arrived fast and gave us something to snack on. I prefer the chunkier style chips and these were fresh and crunchy. Brad’s Chilli Cheese Fries (£4.35) — unfortunately not pictured — came smothered with a rich chilli mixture and a generous helping of cheese. Brad was a happy man but I was slightly concerned for his cholesterol levels…

The Burger

Both of us went for the Cheese or Cheese (£6.15) which is like their Original Burger (Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Dill Pickle, Mayonnaise and Mild American Mustard)  plus a choice of three cheeses — Cheddar, Emmental or American Cheese. The burgers are rather simple in construction, cooked to medium unless otherwise requested. The bun itself is one of those sugary white numbers covered in sesame seeds and wouldn’t look out of place in one of the fast food burger chains.

Open Burger

At that time of the evening, it filled the gaps and there wasn’t a word of complaint from Brad or I. Next time I happen to be passing by in need of a burger, I’ll definitely go for the Best of Ed’s Combo Deals which include a choice of burger or hot dog, fries, onion rings and coleslaw for about the same price as a burger and chips separately. Tip for young players that!

All in all, food, drinks (a few beers and a coke) and service was just shy of £30.
